CIPP/E study plan

Reviewed by Victor Humenhuk. Published 31 August 2026. Reviewed 31 August 2026.

Plan CIPP/E preparation around the published outline, then use retrieval and scenario practice to expose weak areas. IAPP recommends a minimum of 30 study hours for certification exams.

What the exam covers

The current CIPP/E outline groups the exam into the following study areas.

  1. Introduction to European data protection
  2. European data protection law and regulation
  3. European data processing
  4. European data protection scope and accountability
  5. Compliance with European data protection law

Build a study plan you can keep

IAPP recommends at least 30 hours of study. Treat that as a starting point, not a promise of readiness. A four-week plan would average 7.5 hours each week. Increase or reduce the calendar length without compressing review into one sitting.

  1. Week one. Map the study areas and establish a diagnostic baseline.
  2. Week two. Study the weakest areas and use short question sets.
  3. Week three. Mix study areas and practice scenario reasoning.
  4. Week four. Complete a timed set, review errors and revisit weak rules.

Use the hours field in the diagnostic result to make the plan fit your actual week.

Answer in brief

Plan CIPP/E preparation around the published outline, then use retrieval and scenario practice to expose weak areas. Read the IAPP certification FAQs.

Apply this decision

If a study week is short, preserve one retrieval session and one error-review session before adding a new topic. Read the source context.

Common mistake

Concentrating all timed practice in the final week and leaving no time to repair the reasons behind errors.

Build a CIPP/E plan around weak areas

A workable CIPP/E plan alternates coverage, recall, scenario practice and error review across the published study areas.

Practical example

If transfer rules are weak, reserve one lesson session, one short question session and a later review session instead of reading the subject once.

Common mistake

Saving all mixed and timed practice for the end, when an error pattern is harder to diagnose and repair.
