CIPP/E exam questions

Reviewed by Victor Humenhuk. Published 31 August 2026. Reviewed 31 August 2026.

Strong CIPP/E answers identify the controller, processing, legal basis, jurisdiction and remedy before choosing an option. The question wording may be short, but the legal trigger decides the answer.

What the exam covers

The current CIPP/E outline groups the exam into the following study areas.

  1. Introduction to European data protection
  2. European data protection law and regulation
  3. European data processing
  4. European data protection scope and accountability
  5. Compliance with European data protection law

How the questions work

The question bank contains 1,122 exam-style questions, including a 90-question timed set. The count comes from the questions available in the current release.

The certification exams use multiple-choice questions. Some questions use a workplace scenario. A question may require one answer or a stated number of answers. Multi-select questions receive credit only when every required option is correct.

Read the final instruction first. Identify the actor, jurisdiction, lifecycle stage or control being tested. Then eliminate answers that solve a different problem.

Practice the reasoning, not the wording

Use each explanation to state the governing rule in your own words. Then explain why the strongest distractor fails. This turns one question into a reusable decision rule.

How to work through a CIPP/E scenario

Practical example

A retailer profiles an EU visitor. Confirm territorial scope before comparing lawful bases, transparency duties and automated decision rules.

Common mistake

Selecting a familiar data subject right when the facts first require a different scope or lawful basis analysis.
